united states senate. the other thing interesting harry reid said the president has his door open to any negotiating in any kind of deal that the republicans may offer. they put revenues on the table which a lot of conservatives weren't happy with. now, talking about raising tax rates and the president still has not to this day, five or six weeks after election he has still not, laura, put a inning single major item on the table. that is the problem. >> laura: you can respond to stephen. true that john boehner didn't help with the plan bfiasco. stephen is right, isn't he not about harry reid, the idea that he is leading is farcicle. >> they did pass legislation to ensure that taxes wouldn't go up on anybody making $250,000. the senate actually passed legislation. >> laura: there were no spending cuts in that, though. >> the budget control act had $1.5 trillion in spending cuts already approved. so say that the senate hasn't approved spending cuts in the last congress is not true. the problem is this and i feel bad for john boehner if you were obama you don't know who to negotiate wit

harry reid called speaker boehner, that speaker boehner was running dictate toreship in the house. speaker boehner to his face to harry reid, go f yourself and used three other letters. harry reid said back to boehner. what are you talking about. boehner repeated verbatim, go f yourself. this is indication of the poison atmosphere up here. when the sequestration runs out next few months and congress must vote to increase the debt ceiling. it appears speaker boehner is fwirding for a fight on both fronts in a statement that he issued last night. he said in part, quote, now the focus turns to spending. the american people reelected a republican majority in the house and we will use it in 2013 to hold the president accountable for the quote, balanced approach he promised. meaning significant spending cuts and reforms to entitlement programs that are driving our country deeper and deeper into debt. the president last night indicate he is open to come promy to spending cuts but drew a line when it comes to the debt ceiling. here's the president. >> now, one last point i want to make. w

. >> we saw a lot of name-calling. harry reid called boehner a dictator. i find it strange because they don't call actual dick tears dictators. they never call chavez or castro a dictator but they will call boehner a dictator. are they going to start acting like adults soon. >> the house has done their job. it's ironic to me that harry reid goes after john boehner. the house of representatives did this months ago which is when it should have been done. extended the rates. replaced the across the board cuts with responsible reductions in spending. and, yet, here the senate is pointing the finger at the house of representatives. the speaker is right to say it's up to the senate. and this is where it's going to have to happen. >> all right, senator. thanks at lot. next on the run down do both parties actually want to go over the fiscal cliff to save political face? we'll debate it the state department officials out of their jobs after the benghazi terrorist attack are reportedly still on the payroll. we have details moments away. >> greg: continuing with top story tonight. with days to go.

work this out. mcconnell said that is the first time he heard from the president, senator harry reid or any of the tomorrow democrats in about a month. in terms of presidential leadership there had not been that give and take in a month. >> that is astounding as you point out for more than a point. republicans concerned about the impact of the pentagon budget if this goes through. >> when people talk about the fiscal cliff most of the attention is about taxes going up and that being the so called fiscal cliff but the other side of that cliff is that the massive spending cuts automatic cuts are kicking in at the beginning of next year. largely targeted at the pentagon. and what is interesting is all of this deal making we are talking about on capitol hill would really just focus on unemployment benefits and tax side of the cliff as i mentioned and most of deals it appears would not shut off the so called sequester that would hit the pentagon. on "fox news sunday" senator lindsey graham told chris wallace he got a call from the defense secretary suggesting these cuts are coming. lake a li

sell this over in the house. house republicans voted to extend all the bush tax cuts, but harry reid never took that up. and so this is the only vehicle possible to avoid a massive tax hike for the entire country, rick. rick: well, we'll see what happens over the next several hours, and i have a feeling you and i will be talking again throughout the day. happy new year to you, mike. see you again soon. heather: that final deal was hashed out by senate minority leader mitch mcconnell and vice president joe biden. here's the vice president on capitol hill last night just before the senate vote. >> i feel really very, very good about how this vote's going to go. but having been in the senate as long as i have, two things you shouldn't do. you shouldn't predict how the senate's going to vote before they vote, you won't make a lot of money and, number two, you surely shouldn't predict how the house is going to vote. but i feel very, very good. i think we'll get a very good vote tonight. but happy new year, and i will see you all maybe tomorrow. people using warn-out talking points and a lot of misinformation. harry reid is still blaming grover norquist. send him a memo that norquist took himself out of the discussion a week ago when he backed the house republican plan "b." it's like the old stale talking points. for me, the big picture if you take a step back from this, the big picture story here is one of misplaced outrage. media folks with the commentators on all sides complaining there is a lack of compromise. we need comedy in washington. everybody should come together as starbucks barristas want. the real outrage is what started as an effort to trim the size and scope of government, the push tax cuts a decade ago or whether it was the debate over the debt ceiling, just over a year ago, is going to likely end up at asen effort to expand the size and scope of government. that is something that can only happen in washington. you have people that come together to limit government and bunch of contortions and missed opportunities and bad negotiating, it becomes a de facto expansion of government. >> charles? >> well, you kn
